NASCAR goes Nationwide

Let the death watch begin. How long, really, before Nationwide Insurance is out as the title series of NASCAR's top support division, the one now known as the Busch Series?

Not Wal-Mart. Not Subway. Not Visa, Bank of America and certainly not a beer company. Heck, this isn't even Geico or All-State we're talking about here.

When it came to choosing a new sponsor for its 2nd division, NASCAR looked Nationwide.

I don't even know anybody who has Nationwide for an insurer. I'm certain some people do, otherwise this company will be in some trouble when it comes time to pay the sponsorship bills.

Beginning next season, though, it's the NASCAR Nationwide Series on Saturday afternoons.

"As we say in our advertising, life comes at you fast," said James Lyski of Nationwide. "No one knows that better than the NASCAR fans."

Yep, tell us about it. First it was Winston -- gonzo. Then Nextel -- bye-bye. Now Busch -- see ya -- and soon, it will be Nationwide, too.

Or, at the very least, we can only assume.

Nationwide actually makes a lot more money than Geico. It is one of those companies that may not be big around here, but is huge in the Midwest and Southwest states.

Isn't that exactly the point, though? If it doesn't have nationwide appeal (pun intended), what's the point in allowing it in as a sponsor for a nationally-known series?

I could be way off, but I don't see this lasting the full 7 years of the deal.

There is a chance they could be using thie got gain visibility in an effort to bring their business to other parts of the coutnry. When Loews started sponsoring Junior Johnson's Cup car, they were still a pretty regional business. I thought for sure it was the movie thearte chain, not the home improvent stores.(none opened in my area for years after they sponsored their first season) Even Bank of America took quite a while to make it to New England.(through a buyout)

major changes need to be made in what is now the nascar practice league...how about allowing only stocked domestics, i.e., camaro's, mustang's, pinto's, vega's, maverick's, gto's, pacer's, trans am's, etc., then maybe today's youth will realize that american's use to be proud of their big three's and actually buy and drive them...(i have a premonition that the offspring of toda's youth will be driving al quaida range rovers, just the like the offsping of the WW2 veterans kids are driving toyota's...DON'T EVER SAY YOU'LL NEVER FORGET!!!
